Headline: No Reign For Showers This Year
NHRA Pro Stock Bike racer Reggie Showers, whose double win in the K&N Pro Stock Bike Klash and the U.S. Nationals at Indianapolis excited the drag racing world in 2003, today announced that he will be on the sidelines in 2004. The 39-year-old Philadelphia native cited the lack of necessary funding and the desire to spend more time with his family as the reasons for taking the year off.
Showers, a double amputee whose remarkable comeback from a childhood accident gained him nationwide attention, had a career year in 2003. A nine-year Pro Stock Motorcycle veteran, Showers teamed with championship tuner George Bryce of Star Racing, with the association delivering immediate results.
A threat to win at every stop on the circuit, Showers rewrote his personal record books, scoring the first two national event wins of his career in Indianapolis, Indiana, and Memphis, Tennesee. He also advanced to the championship round in Joliet, Illinois, earned the first pole qualifying position of his career in Brainerd, Minnesota, and recorded his quickest elapsed time (7.07 seconds) and fastest top speed (194.27 mph).
Of Showers' decision to take 2004 off, Bryce wished him well.
"It was an unbelievable opportunity for me to coach Reggie to his NHRA victories and watch him complete his life story of overcoming the odds and achieving his goals.” Bryce said. “Everyone worked hard to form a remarkable team. The entire Star Racing family will miss him and we look forward to the day when he can return to the racing tour."

Headline: Brad retires.........
One of the worst kept secrets in UK dragbike racing became public domain this week when Bradley O'Conner announced the sale of his tuning emporium DynoSpeed Developments to Pro Stock Bike and Superstreet rider Paul Watson.
Paul has given up his position as a `Knight of the Road' to acquire the business, whilst Brad is to develop his burgeoning electronics line of fuel injection controllers and quick shift systems.
Paul and Brad will, however, continue to co work on various projects including, it is hoped, Brad's racing Busa that should, with Paul's clutch expertise, enable them to run UK sports first sub 8 second Superstreet bike run.
Good luck to both of them in their new enterprises!

Headline: AHDRA join Brainerd Big race weekend!
The 2004 Brainerd Big Race is shaping up well with the announcement that the AHDRA will also run an event at the same venue to coincide with the big money challenge. For those of you unfamiliar with the Big Race at the fabulous new NHRA Brainerd facility, it paid out an astounding amount of prize money to racers including the feature TF race winner Larry McBride. It's basically a non sanction race where riders of all types of bikes (Harleys and Four cylinder machines) can come together and see who really is the best.
The dates have been set for the 31st July - 1st of August with the AHDRA race scheduled for the two days before, the 29-30 July.

Headline: NHRA Cool Statistics
George Bryce of Star Racing has compiled the following list of interesting statistics for the NHRA Pro Stock Bike class:-

In 2002 the 10th quickest was S. Johnson with a 7.319 average, in 2003 10th quickest was A. Hines with a 7.243 average
In 2002 the class average was 7.388, in 2003 it was 7.341
In 2002 the difference in average from 1st to 10th was 0.134, in 2003 it was 0.054
In 2002 the top 10 in R.T.s suffered 22 red lights, in 2003 they suffered 44
In 2002 the average speed was 180.80, in 2003 it was 180.72
The rider with the most improved et was R. Showers with 7.35 in 2002 to 7.222 in 2003
To summarise the PSB class improved a lot in average et but not in average speed and it appears most of the racers worked on 60 foot times and front half times more than top speed.

Headline: Wanna maximise your sponsorship potential?
We’ve just received some copies of our 2004 promotional DVD from Wizzerama Productions (and ex TFB rider) Brian Johnson. It is a compilation of various digital videos of runs, TV programmes and promotional videos featuring the King Racing machine that we had in our possession. The plan is to enclose it in sponsor applications so that the recipient can easily pop it in their computer and see what we’re writing to them about there and then. BJ has spliced the clips neatly together and provided on screen logo animation, clip descriptions and music with the resulting professional appearing DVD and at a relatively low price.
If any other riders wish BJ to undertake similar work for them using their video clips, photos or what have you, contact him on 01344 625182 (UK).

Entry Forms: Entry forms will no longer be sent out by mail but must be downloaded from the SPRC and APIRA websites. The Vehicle Registration document, which placed racers on the list for mailings of event entry forms, will no longer need to be completed. The season's entry forms will be available in the early part of 2004, so that anyone wishing to enter for the whole season or a couple of events at a time can do so. However, a Press/Commentator form will be produced and Clubs will be requesting racers to complete them as it is in their interest to provide media and track announcers with information. If you are unable to access a computer to download entry forms then contact either Paula Marshall at SPRC or Wendy Talbot at APIRA as detailed below to have entry forms posted or faxed. Alternatively Paula suggests that if you are unable to download entry forms then you can liaise with a fellow racer with a computer to download and print forms for you.
Event Closing Dates: The closing date before each race event at both Santa Pod and Shakespeare County Raceways will be three weeks before the event. The closing date for professional racers before the FIA Main Event and FIA European Finals is four weeks before the event. Late entries by Sportsman racers will incur a late entry fee of £40 in addition to the entry fee for that event. Late entries will be accepted, subject to late-entry fee, at the Clubs' discretion and will be dependent upon the number of entries already in that class. Late entry will be closed one week before each event to allow paperwork to be processed.

Once again Santa Pod Racers Club and Eurodragster.com are teaming up to give their readers the chance to have input to the SPRC Perpetual Awards, which will be presented at the SPRC Dinner Dance on Saturday 21st February 2004.

The SPRC Committee's shortlist for the Paul Giddings Memorial Trophy, in alphabetical order, is as follows. The Paul Giddings Memorial Trophy is a bike-only award named for late racer Paul Giddings, and is presented for overcoming adversity. Nominees have typically had to endure personal problems, severe or prolonged mechanical trouble, an accident or other such troubles, but have faced those problems head-on and come out on top.
Sarah Jane Head, OPM Racing Funny Bike
Ian King, Top Fuel Bike
Len Paget, White Lightning Pro Stock Bike
Ian Turburville, S and S Sure Shot Supertwin Fuel Bike
Paul Watson, Grumpy's Busa Pro Stock Bike
To place your vote, go to the official SPRC Perpetual Awards page which you can view clicking on the SPRC Perpetual Awards vote link on the left-hand side of any Eurodragster page. Voting is per category, so if you have already voted for any of the five previous awards then you may of course vote for the Paul Giddings Memorial Trophy this week.

Headline: Koedam Racing Year End Review
Another year is about to end and what a year it was! We'd like to take a look back at the high and (though very few) low lights of this race season. Apart from our results one thing that immediately comes to mind is the excellent good weather conditions that we were blessed with. As everyone knows, this is a main ingredient for a successful drag race event. The only exception was the “Veidec Internationals” at Mantorp Park in Sweden, which came to a sudden halt just before the final rounds because the rain set in just a few hours too soon.
This year we attended a record number of 9 events. Allow me to give a brief summary of our race schedule:-
Speedfreaks Ball (Santa Pod Raceway / England) May 9-11: Season opener / qualified #1 / won the event / the bike already displayed its real potential.
Main Event (Santa Pod Raceway / England) May 24-26: 1st round of the FIM-European Championship / qualified #1 / won the event / reset personal best to a 6.23.
Fast & Furious (Drachten / Holland) June 14 &15: Entered as a demo to this eighth mile track / reset the all time national record to a 4.18sec @185mph (295km/h).
Nitronationals (Alastaro /Finland) July 4-6: 2nd round of the FIM-European Championship / qualified #1 / stranded in the semi-finals with a broken primary drive belt.
Drachten Internationals (Drachten / Holland) July 11-13: Spectacular runs again / no track records this time.
Veidec Internationals (Mantorp Park / Sweden ) July 24-27: 3rd round of the FIM-European championship / qualified #1 with a new track record of 6.29 “right off the trailer”, despite an early click off. Though we went till the finals, a winner was never decided because rain set in just before the final rounds.
Drag Challenge (Gardermoen / Norway) August 1-3: 4th round of the FIM-European Championship / qualified #1 / dived into the “teens” for the first time / reset personal & track records / won the event.
Nitrolympics (Hockenheim / Germany) August 22-24: 5th round of the FIM-European Championship / qualified #1 / won the event / reset the track record / clinched the European Top Fuel Bike Championship title with still one more round to go.
European Finals (Santa Pod Raceway / England) September 5-7: 6th and final round of the FIM-European Championship / qualified #1 / reset personal-, track- & European records (both ET and speed) / became the fastest & quickest bike outside the USA / stranded in the semi finals when a con rod let go in a big ball of fire.
This year were pleased with a growing interest for our renamed Top Fuel Bike class. It resulted in a record number of entries by no less then twelve top fuel bikes at some events. Despite this strong field we clinched the FIM-Championship title for the 3rd time and we did so with a record lead of 313 points over 159 points for the championship runner-up.
From the media side we can inform you that the both the FIM and the FIA European Championship rounds were broadcast again by an increased number of satellite TV stations. These images were broadcast all over Europe and as far as the Middle East and the USA, however unfortunately not yet shown on Dutch national TV. We understand that they are trying to work out a deal for next year.
A few words from the technical side. Part of our performance gains has to be credited to the new Mickey Thompson tyre. As another first Top Fuel Bike team in Europe we started using this all new tyre which was developed specially for Top Fuel motorcycles. Our efforts paid off and we improved our 60 ft times and added more consistency.
On the down side we had three “small” technical problems that plagued us now and then during the season. These items therefore are the major things on which we will be focused during this winter break. In the first place we broke the primary drive belt twice at critical points in an race. We are converting the primary drive from a 8mm to a 14mm pitch belt that will give us a much stronger and more reliable primary drive. Another technical aspect that didn’t work flawlessly each time was the clutch release bearing system so this system is undergoing a redesign as well. The most important thing that led to a lot of extra maintenance work during the season was caused by the new material cylinder liners that we experimented with. Though the liners itself worked fine, this could not be said for the piston rings. The liners were simply too tough for any type of rings. The rings couldn’t seal as they should do. We experienced more “blow by” than normal, causing loss of power and oil dilution which led to a lot more maintenance of the bearing shelves and the piston rings. At the last event this led to our “infamous” spectacular engine explosion when we blew the complete bottom end to pieces. A new bottom end is already in manufacture.
On the positive side we know the reasons for these three “troublemakers” and more importantly, we also know how to fix them. Therefore we are more than confident that we can solve these problems and expect that we can create a reliable and consistent bike for next year. Our record 6.04 sec run was performed without pushing the engine to its limits (still low on nitro %). Because of the aforementioned “blow by” of the piston rings we were losing more power on each run. Giving the fact that we will be able to solve this, we are confident that we should be able to improve these numbers next year (of course given good track & weather conditions).
In the immediate future we are also investigating the possibilities to take the bike over to the USA again for a number of races. This could be a combined deal with a few other European Top Fuel bike teams.
All the results that we achieved this year would not have been possible without the input from all the team members. On top of all the awards that we received this season we are very proud that our crew chief was elected as “Crewchief of the Year” in Holland and yours humble is also very honoured to be nominated by the Santa Pod Racers Club for the “James Edgar Memorial Award” (to be presented to a crewchief for his outstanding performance).
Koedam Racing once again likes to express that all would not be possible without the help from the following companies and thanks them for their support. At the same time we are looking forward to another (possibly an even more spectacular) race season in 2004!

Headline: Benjamin Crawford
We are sorry to bring you some sad news. As some of you may already know, Jon Crawford and his wife Jane have been expecting a very special new arrival, a new baby brother for James and Dominic. Well, after a long (14 Hour) and difficult labour, Benjamin Alfred Crawford came into the world at eight minutes past five in the early evening of Tuesday, December the ninth 2003.
He was five weeks early, but still weighed in at four pounds ten ounces, an exceptionally good size for his condition.
It is with the deepest regret that we have to inform you that Benjamin's problems were just too much for his body to deal with, and he lost his short, valiant and spirited battle for life just a few minutes later at 5.12 PM.
During his time, he felt no pain and did not suffer at all. Throughout his entire life, he was surrounded by love and warmth, and he bought his family nothing but joy.
A funeral service for Benjamin will be held on Monday the 15th of December at 1:30 P.M., at St Mary's Church, Little Harrowden, Northamptonshire. Jane and Jon have requested that only family send flowers, but if anyone wishes to make a donation to the St Mary's Heritage Trust in Benjamin's name, please let them know and we they will forward details by return.

Headline: Get well soon Jim
We heard the sad news from Top Fuel Bike rider Tommy Smith that his crew chief and business partner Jim Toner (Big Jim) is in the hospital in ICU, in a critical but stable condition.
Jim has a bruised brain, broken arm, cracked spine, broken leg and so many fractured ribs the doctors didn't even bother to count them. He is in the trauma intensive care unit at his local hospital and will be there for quite some time. Tommy and Jim have two companies (flooring & road striping) and he was on a striping project when a car swerved off the road to avoid a barrell and struck him. At this point it apppears he's going to be ok but it will be a long recovery.
Our thoughts go out to Jim and his family as well as Tommy, Clark, Kenneth, and Jerry, the rest of the Motorworks Team.

Headline: Rotti, Austria's record holder!
I am Markus "ROTTI" Rottensteiner, record holder for the last 8 years for 1/4 Mile races in Austria. It´s really a pity that this kind of motorsport is not that popular as it is in the US - we drive our races simply on blocked off roads or small private airports. The race organisations mostly do not allow any kind of burn out stuff. There are about 10 different races all over Austria, but I´m not able to race at all of them as the braking area is too short or ends with a turn (I´m sure you know it’s extremely dangerous to do this with a powerful stretched and lowered bike...)
In 1989 my father began racing with a big bore Suzuki GSXR 1100. At the age of 16 I was far too young to race, because in Austria you have to be 18 to get a licence. But in 1991 Istarted to race for the 1st time on a 175 HP Suzuki GSXR and in 1993 I won the International Dragster Cup ( IDC-Series) in Berlin and Nürburgring with a Honda CBR 900 RR ( Streetbike-class). Since 1995 I’ve been the unofficial recordholder for the Austrian 1/4 mile and from then until 2001 I won most of the races with my Suzuki GSXR 7/11 (1300 cc, NOS, 221 RWHP)
2 Years ago I bought my Kawasaki ZX 12 R (an accident wreck like all the others) and built it up with the following elements :- Suzuki GSXR front forks, Honda CBR 1100 XX wheels ( 3,5" front and 7" back ), Honda Triple Clamp, Gilera Scooter rear brake, homemade Swingarm... Last but not least I Place an order with Schnitz Racing for a Dyna Shift Minder with Light, Schnitz progressive Controller, Muzzy Airshifter and Sidewinder Exhaust, lowering links and front Straps, M/T MCR 2, Barnett Clutch, WOT Switch, RPM Activated Switch, NOS Parts, and much more...
At this time I’d like to thank Ryan and Amy from Schnitz Racing for all their support and help during the last year as well as the www.zx-12r.org for all their advice. Beside this I also own a naked Honda CBR 1100 XX (X11), 202 RWHP (thanx to Honda Austria and www.faber.at ), and a naked ZX12R for the streetbike class (thanx to moto rotti racing). Much sweat and work has been expended over the last year on the ZX12 with the result of 247 RWHP with NOS (without 186HP) with original pistons!!!
My best E.T. this year for 1/8 mile 6.24/198 km/h and 1/4 mile 9.32/268 km/h (no track bite but normal road and rolling burn out). My goals for 2004: breaking the 9 sec mark, more HP, cc and bigger NOS Jetting and most important getting a handful of sponsoring partners to make all this possible! Headline: No longer Star quality?
It was announced this week that Fred Collis and Star Racing were to part company after their 5 year association.
During his time with Star he appeared as a rider for the race team and served as an instructor at the Frank Hawley / Star Racing Pro Stock Bike School.
Collis commenced racing with Star in 1999 winning the Prostar Pro Stock championship in his first year with them, deservedly attaining the Rookie of the Year title and proved it to be no fluke by winning the title again the following year.
This year Fred raced a Star Powered Suzuki TL-1000 on the NHRA tour attaining a final 8th in the championship, winning the Pontiac Excitement Nationals in Columbus, OH on the way and finishing the 2003 season as the third quickest rider in NHRA history with a 7.059.

Gabriel Uttley, land speed record contender is seeking a cheap Hayabusa engine for use in his vehicle `Angelic Bulldog' for his assault on a two wheel record at Verneuk Pan in South Africa in 2004.
Gabriel originally planned to use one of the Puma V8 TF engines originally owned by Ian King, but conflicting timescales with the current owner mean he has to seek an (turbocharged) alternative.
2004 see's the 75th anniversary of Malcolm Campbell's 1929 attempt on the outright World Land Speed record in the Northern Cape Province, and will see Gabriels attempt joined by Campbell's grandson Don Wales driving Colin Fallows' Vampire jet car (a past regular at Santa Pod) and friend of King Racing Richard Brown in his `Maximum Impulse' motorcycle streamliner.

If you have not already done so, surf over to Eurodragster.com and get your vote in for Santa Pod Racers Club James Edgar Memorial Trophy perpetual award which will be presented at the SPRC Dinner Dance on Saturday 21st February 2004.
The late James Edgar was an invaluable member of John Menetrier's team until his untimely death, and the trophy was dedicated in his name for outstanding performance by a Crew Chief.
This year the SPRC Committee's shortlist includes two motorcycle race candidates, Roger Yelland, Team Krazy Kat Super Street Bike (rider Karl Larcombe) and Marius van der Zijden, Roel Koedam's Top Fuel Bike.
To place your vote, go to the official SPRC Perpetual Awards page which you can view by clicking on the SPRC Perpetual Awards vote link on the left-hand side of any Eurodragster page.
Voting is per category, so if you have already voted for Best-Looking Car or Bike or Most Professional-Appearing Team then you may of course vote for the James Edgar Memorial Trophy this week.
After King Racing crew chief Mick Beaumont failed to get a nomination in 2001 for his outstanding achievement in tuning a vehicle to both British and European Championships in the same year, let's make sure the outstanding achievements of either Roger and Marius do not go unrewarded this year!

Headline: Oz Nationals Review
The Australian Nationals were run over the weekend of November 21-23.
For the majority of the weekend it was bloody hot with the mercury was between 90 and 100, except when it rained on Saturday afternoon and into the evening.
TOP BIKE
Jay Upton top qualified and ran new PB's on his blown Triumph. He started with a 6.699/180.22, backed that up with a 6.658/195.74 in the second session and then rolled out a 6.613/209.01 to reset the Australian ET record in the first round against Phil "Turbo Bundy Boy" Parker. In the second round he thumped Troy McLean with a 6.745/186.96.
Brett Stevens finally got the monkey off his back and hit sixes and 200 with a 6.988/200.98 in the first session. The second session saw the Jack Daniels' Harley break traction but he made amends with a 6.944/198.85 in the first round. Despite running a PB 7.427 in the second round, Craig Bonwick was beaten by Stevens' 6.887/200.98.
Upton hit the wrong switch as he went into stage against Stevens in the final sending the Harley on a solo. Stevens hung onto low gear too long and the big Harley was dieseling by half track.
PRO STOCK BIKE
Jason Lee top qualified on Angelo Ganitis' RBD/APE Suzuki with a 7.817. The rest of the field was: Peatey, 7.824; Densmore, 7.830; Scerri, 7.868; Allen, 7.888; Langley, 8.000; Howard, 8.122; and Gilbertson, 8.146.
Maurice Allen won the final with a 7.849 over a troubled Nevil Langley.
COMP BIKE
Australian Comp Bike Champion John Parker top qualified with a 0.144 under-8.876 on his Morgan & Wacker-sponsored P/CB Harley. Comp Bike debutant Kelvin Brittain qualified fifth on his B/CB Suzuki and met Parker in the final where a good 8.368 was beaten by the Champ's 8.825.
MODIFIED BIKE
Australian Modified Bike Champion Bob Shaw topped the 29 bike DYO field with a 9.089 but he was gone in the semi finals. Three of the four semi finalists were Suzuki GSX-based running without wheelie bars. Kawasaki-mounted Shaw was the odd man out. And he had wheelie bars. Kevin Williamson took the win on his stock EFE 1135 over Steve Freeman who was running 9.2s on his turbo'd 1360 EFE.
SCREAMIN' EAGLE
21 racers fronted for the DYO Street Harley Class. Eddie Todd top qualified with a 10.789/127.16 on his Buell S1 Lightning. The all-1200 Sportster final had Manda Bolam against David Stevenson. The win went to Stevenson by 0.10.

Hi, I`m a Funnybike driver from Norway and won the Nordic championship 2003. My best ET is 7.65 and my best 60 foot is 1,17.
The bike is a Yamaha FJ 1380ccm, Turbo injection, intercooler++++.
We ran this ET with an original Yamaha FJ transmission and my question is: does anyone of your readers know of anyone who has ran such an ET with an original transmission, and if so, how fast?
Best regards from Svein Arne Skjervø - Norway

PS: You have a great website
Gossip comment - Well anyone know? The only people we are familiar with in the UK running FJ Funnybike is Andy Newcombe. There is a Greek Turbo FJ but we have no performance detail, and Joe Kennerson in the US is an FJ fiend so may know more about FJ performances on that side of the Atlantic. We (King Racing) probably hold the record for the fastest run with a standard FJ head though (6.42 secs)!

Headline: Team Fang
Hi Folks, Action from Team Fang has been rather limited in 2003 due to lack of spare time with our business www.turnertech.co.uk working a 10 hour, 7 day week for much of the last 6 months. On the 3 occasions we did make it to the track, ignition problems, supercharger shaft failure and fuel starvation (in that order) prevented a full run. However with 15 psi boost from the old Shorrocks, performance has dramatically improved and given the incentive to press on with our development program for the 1975 Honda twin and it's future replacement. New oversize liners (Skoda!) are currently being fitted to match forged Kawasaki pistons, this entails external oil feed pipes to the head , a new clutch cover with external spin off oil filter and off-board starter among other mods. Best of all, a new Eaton supercharger will replace the fragile shorrocks vane type and to this end the 'Superchargers' section of www.thefang.co.uk now features the first instalment on the Eaton, with photos of the disassembled unit. Over the next few months the page will follow the pattern established for the Shorrocks, with dimensioned drawings and information gathered during testing.
Kind regards, Carl Wadkin-Snaith.

To mark the opening of the 'Turbo Ville' shop in Nottingham I have been looking for something special to offer and after an exhaustive search of the United States have found it!! I have actually sourced the last few Vance& Hines 'Doug Vancil, Top-Fuel Harley', die-cast drag bikes!!! As you know these were a very limited edition and sold out within a few months of being issued, not even Vance & Hines can get them. They are incredible works of art and the most detailed replica I have ever seen and each comes with a certificate. The quality is unsurpassed and they are appreciating in value all the time. I have had to buy these few bikes at retail and pay vat, shipping and customs etc. on top of that so they are not cheap but if you have seen one you know they are worth it. It will be first come first served I'm afraid and they will be with me on Monday. Price is £189-00 each plus insured postage. Once they're gone...they're gone!!

Headline: Bits from the Brits
Last night saw Dave Beck's final evening as a free man as the pre wedding stag night took place in Safety Harbor's Bricktown 54 night club - and what a night for the happy tourists. Packed with what seemed to be hundreds of the female cast of Baywatch, the night gradually got more and more messy as the $1 charge for all drinks took effect.....
However, not all the tourists enjoyed the night as the doorman mistook Cannon, Al Cook and Neil Midgley's sharp street fashion for something they stole from the local charity shop and refused them entry. Apparently they then decided to retire to their rooms for some early shuteye, but reports of Cannon's collapsing motel bed seem to suggest something else.....
The title of best man was also somewhat of a misnomer when Roger Upperton also failed to gain entry with what he thought was chic footwear when everyone else thought they were trainers, and then took three hours to select some of his dad's Hush Puppies before returning close to closing time. The cheap drinks took their toll as few managed to make the late night church service........
Anyhow, Dave and Charlotte tie the knot at 4.00 this afternoon in the Clearwater Beach Hotel - best wishes to the both of them!

Headline: Gainesville round up
Both Dave Beck and Chris Hannam failed to make it past the first round when Beck's gearbox failed at the launch in Pro Mod and Hannam was unable to take advantage of a wheel smoking pass by number one qualifier Ron Webb in Top Fuel Bike.
Two Harleys made it to the finals of Pro Class competition when Bill Furr took his Nitro Harley into the final of Top Fuel bike against Larry McBride and Mark Conner took his small tyre Nitro Pro Fueller into the final of Funnybike against Travis Davis. Both put down some great passes but were unable to overcome their four cylinder equipped opponents.
Despite some great back to back 6.20 passes before eliminations by the Redneck Express Top Fuel team of Chris Hand, Andy, Steve and Sharon, a failing fuel pump caused a spectacular head torching incident to put him out of competition.
Outstanding passes of the day came courtesy of Geno Scali, Larry McBride, and Barry Henson. Scali narrowly failed to run the sports first 6 second Pro Stock bike pass with a 7.005 on his Trim Tex Suzuki, McBride also narrowly missed out on Gainesville Raceway’s first 5 second TFB pass when he ran a 6.007 in the TF final, and Barry Henson won Streetbike Shootout on his street tyred no wheeliebar Honda Blackbird with a 7.591. A mention should be made of his opponent in the final, Dave Stewart who came all the way from South Africa to take his works Kawasaki into the final to run a game 7.965.
Class of the meet was Pro Mod bike with the amazing 16 bike bump spot time of 7.08 and a final round where the loser ran a 6.883!
Final results:-
TOP FUEL
Larry McBride 6.007 @ 243 bt Bill Furr 7.788 @ 120
FUNNYBIKE
Travis Davis 6.802 @ 202 bt Mark Conner 6.971 @ 169
PROMOD
Ashley Owens 6.905 @ 191.36 bt Mimmo Marciano 6.883 @ 193
PROSTOCK
Geno Scali 7.047 @ 192 bt Todd Doege 7.107 @ 191

For each of the 2003 season awards, the SPRC Committee has decided upon a shortlist for which votes can be submitted by E-Mail.
There are seven awards in all: this week's vote, the second, is for Best-Looking Bike. Voting for the Alex Brachtvogel Memorial Trophy will also be open for the whole of this period (see below).
The SPRC Committee's shortlist for Best-Looking Bike is as follows, in alphabetical order:

The Alex Brachtvogel Memorial Trophy, for which votes are also now being taken, was first awarded to Santa Pod Raceway's late Chief Marshal, Alex Brachtvogel, in 2001 to mark his outstanding contribution to Santa Pod Raceway and the sport as a whole. After Alex's death the trophy was named in his memory and continues to be awarded for contribution to drag racing. There is no shortlist for the Alex Brachtvogel award. Nominations are invited for racers, race officials, track and safety crews, club officials, media, or anyone else who has contributed to the sport. Last year the trophy was awarded to Phil Evans, Chair of the UK Tech Committee. Again see the official web page for more details or E-Mail your nomination to sprcawards@eurodragster.com specifying SPRC Alex Brachtvogel Trophy as the subject and your nomination in the body of the mail.

Headline: Cannon, Beck, in the field
Both Chris Hannam and Dave Beck made the field for today's eliminations at the Prostar Finals in Gainesville. Chris ran a last ditch qualifying pass of 7.804 @ 157 after his hardworking crew of Neil Midgley, Al Cook, Frank Brachtvogel and the co opted Dom Trickett had toiled to repair some valve train damage caused by the lack of lash caps on the exhaust valves. In addition, Neil had to repair the blower drive twice over the weekend after it sheared it's location bolts. Chris has an enormous task on his hands as he meets Alaska's Ron Webb in the first round who ran a stunning 6.04 @ 227 to take the number 1 spot.
In Pro Mod, Dave Holland just failed to meet a tough 16 bike bump spot of 7.08 when he ran a best of 7.133. Dave Beck got in the field in 13th position with a 7.012.
Good luck lads!

Headline: Gainesville
It seems that the Brits have taken over at the Prostar finals with more than 30 attending the final meet of the year!
Yesterday saw Dave Holland run a fabulous off the trailer 7.14 on his Ken Cooper tuned Pro Mod bike. Dave Beck did not fare so well with what seemed to be an overly agressive setup causing an aborted run. Under advice from Frank Brachtvogel and Tony Lang, Chris Hannams bike went to the line with a new fuel system and made a great burnout and launch only to break a drive belt a few yards out.
The day had a sad note when one of the family members of Larry McBrides sponsor collapsed and died of a heart attack at the track. Understandably, Larry opted to step out of qualifying for the day.
On a happier note, at the Cabot Lodge Cocktail Nationals Ken Cooper led the field with an impressive 8 Jim Beams and Cokes in the first 30 minutes.
`Dickydoo' Hannam also made a good showing as babe magnet of the day with two lady supporters of the big man coming all the way from the UK just to see him in Ale House action........

Notable performance from Geno Scali in PSB with a brace of 7.01's.

Headline: Cannon reports
Chris Hannam reported in to us earlier today through his English speaking interpreter Jay Regan :-
"After missing our connecting flight at Atlanta due to immigration officials, I was starting to get worried about how things were shaping up", says Cannon. "But I have to say that we are well on course again and even managed copious amounts of shrimp and wings for lunch joined by Mr. Cook and Mr. Midgley who I have to say ate the most.
"We returned from lunch with the petrol can filled and proceeded to fire the bike for the first time since I myself built the motor. I have to say that everything is A-OK at this point, myself Neil and Al are to try and fit the Tracecraft datalogger tomorrow, hopefully this will go smoothly and enable us to get some much needed tuning data. The big argument at the moment is which lucky person is getting the job of pushing me back!
"That's about all for now, we will keep you updated of any major developments. Lastly a big well done to Dave Wilson and and the American Car Imports team for a job well done and for giving the yanks something to think about, we had lots of pleasurable viewing watching the whole meeting on ESPN."

Headline: Treble takes Savoie in Pomona
In a repeat of the last NHRA stop in Las Vegas, Treble matched up with former three-time champion Angelle Savoie in the final round of the NHRA Finals in Pomona. This time, Treble earned his second win in as many races at the starting line when Savoie left the starting line early and was disqualified with a -.013-second reaction time. The foul might not have mattered as Treble posted a 7.129 at 184.07 mph to Savoie's trailing 7.136 at 191.10 mph.
The victory salvaged an otherwise forgettable season for Treble, a championship contender who ended up fifth in the points. He finished 2-2 in four final-round appearances, and dropped Savoie to an even 3-3 when the trophy was on the line this year.
"I wish we could have had this bike in Atlanta," Treble said. "This thing is perfect for me. Even Matt [Hines] was like, 'Wow, I don't think I want to come back now.' He weighs 175 and I weigh 150 and the way we moved things around it just made for a perfect fit.
"This was a great way to end a rotten year. What a rollercoaster ride. We started strong, thinking about the title. Then we hurt a motor. Then we had a DNQ. I've blown up a few motors. It's just been crazy.
"I have to give all the credit to [engine suppliers] Vance & Hines. They are the sole reason I'm here, the sole reason we've won these last two races, and the sole reason I have this deal with Matco."
Atop former champion Matt Hines' borrowed Suzuki, Treble fought through to his seventh career win with elimination-round victories over Fred Camarena, Steve Johnson, Mike Berry, and Savoie. His Matco Tools/NitroFish bike was the quickest of the first two rounds.
U.S. Army rider Savoie beat Karen Stoffer, GT Tonglet, and Michael Phillips to reach the 49th final round of her 105-race career. Savoie's best pass of the early rounds was a 7.12, which she ran in the semifinals. The pass gave her lane choice over Treble, which she subsequently negated with the fourth red-light of her '03 campaign.

Headline: Latest Prostar video release
We were delighted to review the latest video release from Brian Johnson's Wizzard Productions of the 2002 Noralk round of the AMA Prostar Dragbike Championship.
BJ's video work continues to improve and impress, with some great angles and perspectives in the camera work sadly lacking in most drag coverage today. Despite the need for some `probing' interviews with racers to supplement the excellent race footage, it is an absorbing view, and one that any serious dragbike fan should have amongst their video collection. The weird and wonderful also figure, with Jason Pridemores amazing blown V6 Top Fuel Bike on a demonstration pass, and a pug ugly V8 machine wobbling down the track.

Headline: Cannon fired up!
UK Top Fuel Bike Rider Chris "Cannon" Hannam is in the final stages of preparation before flying to Gainesville to race his TF Bike at the Prostar World Finals event.
"The bike is now safely at MRE in Florida, and a big thanks to Malcolm at Air Sea Logistics for a great job well done" says Cannon. "I have spoke with Frank and Tony Lang who have agreed to consult for us in the chase for our first 6 second pass. Everybody is ready for the challenge, Al Cook Neil Midgley and myself will fly out on saturday and rest up on Sunday, probably with a bbq at Jay's before attending the Bucs football game on sunday night before getting down to the serious business of getting the bike race ready."
"We will leave for Gainesville wednesday morning and with the bike to unpack, the computer to try and fit, and the need to completely go through the bike time is at a premium. I only hope we can do ourselves justice and put on a good show. Once again my thanks go to everybody who is helping me to make this happen, one of which is Paul Rose who has stepped in at the death with some much needed help that was totally unexpected to say the least, it just shows how racers pull together when the chips are down (is that all you had to do, share your chips with Rosie for some dosh – Ed?).
"I can also confirm that Dave Holland's promod is cleared and ready for delivery to MRE so everything seems to be going ok and it is a great relief to me know that my bike is sat there while myself and Cooky can just get on the plane and enjoy the 1st class delights (save some of the bubbly for Rosie – Ed.....) and talk about our game plan! Once again thanks to all concerned and I'm sure our roving reporters will keep you all up to date with our successes or disasters.."
Kind Regards

Headline: DATE CHANGE IN THE AMA/PROSTAR 2004 SCHEDULE
We have just been informed that NASCAR has moved their Brickyard 400 and Kroger 200 on top of our regular date at Indianapolis Raceway Park. Due to the fact that IRP parks cars on the drag strip and the pit area, this forces us to move our event date.
Please note that the new date for the Pingel Thunder Motorcycle Nationals will now be August 21-22, 2004. This is two weeks later than the previously released schedule.
We apologize for any inconvenience.

Headline: The BIR BIG race announcement
I have had limited discussions with both ProStar and AHDRA to be included in or prior to our 2004 BigRace. Now that their 2004 schedules have been posted, who know's. It's no secret to anyone that knew anything about BigRace #1 that Brainerd International Raceway lost alot of money (upwards of $200,000) with the 1st annual event. We're big people though with broad shoulders and don't mind investing in something we believe in. A lot of people contacted us after the fact and said "geez", I should have been there. Well here's your notice...we will host a BigRace in 2004 tentatively set for July 22-24. Look for some rule changes that offer us a better opportunity to get more entries and better racer support. Most people know why we did this event and what our goals were going into it. Here's your chance to make your wishes known. If you have a valid suggestion and would support the 2004 BigRace, I'm all ears. Contact me through my personal e-mail at birgm@brainerd.net or call me toll free at 1-866-444-4455.

Headline: The Bud Shootout, The Last Race And More!!
There are still a few things to be determined this year, like who will win the Budweiser Shootout, the final race of the 2003 season and the Pro Stock Bike championship. What, you thought the bike title was already decided? OK, so Geno Scali really does have a hammer lock on the championship but Angelle Savoie could still catch him. All she has to do is win the race and she can be the four-time champion, that is if Geno doesn’t show up and attempt a qualifying run. Wait a minute, I just came back from the track and Geno’s Trim Tex Suzuki trailer is there so I guess he’s going to show up and run, so I’ll change my opinion, Angelle can’t catch him and Geno will be the 2003 Pro Stock Bike champion. Did you know that there were 54 different drivers who made runs in the Pro Stock Bike class this year? That just goes to show how healthy the class is and Geno will get a real test next year when he opens up defense of his championship. The 54 number is the best in the “modern era” of the Pro Stock Bike class which goes back to 1989. Congrats to Geno and all of the other competitors in the class, one of the most exciting on the NHRA POWERade tour.

We've had a further update on TF Harley rider Bernie Hepworth's health, and I'm afraid the news is even worse than we first reported. He has specically asked us to report the full details of his condition, in order that he doesn't get the usual (but understandable) `how are you' questions.
He's been in hospital for a few days for more tests and has had confirmed that he is suffering from Multiple Myeloma which is a cancer of the blood plasma and bones, without any known cure or cause. It causes the bones to degenerate and to break without reason and Bernie is already suffering 3 broken vertebrae and four ribs which will not heal.
With extensive chemo, radiotherapy and a stem cell transplant he has a year or maybe two, without treatment a few months at best. In the meantime he must not work and take extreme care whilst he waits for a hospital bed.
It is now very important for him to sell all of his racing stuff as soon as possible. Please contact him as soon as possible if you are interested in his ad on here a few days ago.

Headline: Cannon comes out
Well, its official. As reported here earlier we are indeed going to the double header at Gainesville with the fuel bike. Subject to no breakage the bike will also be staying out there under the watchful eye of Andy(cheeky) Dawson for the season opener in March.
Our aim is to achieve the goal of a 6 second pass and with our super crew of Neil Midgley, Al Cook, Mike Vickers and Frank Brachtvogel there will be no shortage of knowledge to aid our cause. I have also upgraded our Tracecraft datalogger in the hope we can fit it before we race to try and get some much needed valuable data. The top end has been totally rebuilt and the cam timing totally changed after careful consultation with Tony Lang and Prostock guru Roger Upperton with the aim to be more reliable, so lets hope it works.
I have also rebuilt the clutch for the 1st time since we got the bike as I now know this is very important and I undertake to make sure the jobs get done - as they say, if you want something doing do it yourself……………
It has been a hard week in the garage on my own with some late nights although a big thank you has to go to Roger Upperton as he recut the valve seats, rebuilt the head and dialed in the new cam timing. With the clutch and gearbox back together it was off to work to build the packing crate. We might not win Top Fuel but we should have an award for the best built crate!
I’m very grateful to my good friends for their much needed help and assistance in building a work of art and as all this was only decided a week ago a lot of people have given me good advice and put a lot of there own time and effort in to make this happen. So a big thank you to Terry Gibbs, Al Cook, Jay Regan and Malcolm Francis whose company Airsea Logistics has undertaken to get our bike out there at short notice and at a competitive price, so to say I’m grateful is an understatement. I would also like to thank Frank Brachtvogel, Brian Johnson, Ian King, Tony Lang and Neil Midgley for their continued help and advice and hope that we can learn more to get close to that elusive 6 second barrier.
The bike and spares are now crated and will leave for Airsea Logistics on Wednesday to be flown to the USA where it will be delivered to MRE for uncrating and we can then get to work on getting ready to leave for Gainesville on Wednesday 12th where we hopefully will contest 2 meetings over 4 days - quite a gruelling schedule. I hope lady luck shines on us, it is always a great experience to race at Gainesville as the crowd and the racers are fantastic and really make you feel at home. Finally, once again a big thanks to everyone who has helped me get this far.
Kind regards,
Chris (cannon) Hannam

Headline: Shakespeare County Raceway dates 2004 released
Lee Child’s LA Performance Services have released next year's calendar of events at Shakespeare County Raceway, penned by the scribes at Eurodragster. The schedule includes three UK National Championship and Ultimate Power Championship dates as well as the retention of two of this year's specialist events, a new event for the Modified scene, and a number of Club Days.
The 2004 UK National Championships and Ultimate Power Championships are due to be contested at the Excitement Nationals on Saturday-Monday 1st-3rd May, the Power Nationals on 12th-13th June, and the Allstar Nationals on Saturday-Monday 28th-30th August.
"The three Ultimate Power events were very successful in 2003 with large entries and a lot of close-fought racing, and we are looking to go even bigger and better next season", says Lee Child of LA Performance Services. "Also the Allstar Nationals and the Nitrolympics at Hockenheim do not clash next season which will save racers the dilemma of deciding which race to attend."
Stay tuned for full details about other classes to be contested at the 2004 Excitement, Power and Allstar Nationals.
The Doorslammer Internationals will next year be combined with the Classic American Nationals and will take place on Saturday-Sunday 15th-16th May. The five-bracket format will be preserved and will run alongside the Run What You Brung, but racing will be for trophies, with no entry fee payable other than the standard RWYB fee and no prize money on offer. "These two events were ideal to combine", says Lee. "The Classic American Nationals was already a Run What You Brung and Show and Shine so we were able to fit the Doorslammer Internationals format into it quite easily."
The Modified Nitrous Nationals is a new event scheduled for Saturday-Sunday 29th-30th May and is aimed at European, Japanese and other Modified vehicles; more details to follow. The season-ending Halloween Showdown has been retained and takes place on Saturday-Sunday 30th-31st October. "We aim to build the Halloween Showdown into a themed end-of-season bash", says Lee. "We want it to be a real party weekend as well as a Test and Tune."
The APIRA Test and Tune opens the SCR season on Saturday-Sunday 3rd-4th April, with Club Day Test and Tune events on Saturdays-Sundays 17th-18th April, 17th-18th July (Mini Showdown), and 2nd-3rd October. The Club Days are open to all clubs; any club interested in testing and tuning at Shakespeare County Raceway on these dates is invited to contact LA Performance Services on 01803 554308 or E-Mail la.racing@virgin.net. The Bulldog Bash bike event takes place on Friday-Sunday 13th-15th August.
A very welcome development is the news that next year's NSRA Nostalgia Nationals and Hot Rod Drags have been moved so that they no longer clash with the SPRC Summernationals and FIA European Finals respectively. This removes what has long been a difficult decision for fans of both current and Hot Rod/Nostalgia drag racing.
The complete 2004 calendar of events at Shakespeare County Raceway is therefore as follows:
3rd-4th April: APIRA Test and Tune
17th-18th April: Club Day (Test and Tune/RWYB)
1st-3rd May: Excitement Nationals (UK National and Ultimate Power Chamionships)
15th-16th May: Classic American Nationals incorporating Doorslammer Internationals
29th-30th May: Modified Nitrous Nationals
12th-13th June: Power Nationals (UK National and Ultimate Power Chamionships)
3rd-4th July: NSRA Nostalgia Nationals
17th-18th July: Club Day, Mini Showdown (Test and Tune/RWYB)
13th-15th August: Bulldog Bash (Bike event)
28th-30th August: Allstar Nationals (UK National and Ultimate Power Chamionships)
18th-19th September: NSRA Hot Rod Drags
2nd-3rd October: Club Day (Test and Tune/RWYB)
30th-31st October: Halloween Showdown (Test and Tune/RWYB)

Headline: Bryce sees Harleys in the future
George Bryce has little to complain about. And in drag racing, people like that are hard to find.
Between 2000 and 2002, Bryce and his Star Racing Pro Stock Motorcycle team with Angelle Savoie in the seat won three straight NHRA POWERade championships, rewrote the NHRA history books, and appeared to be on their way to a long-running racing dynasty.
But big changes after last season saw Angelle move to another team owned by Antron Brown, while Bryce, a master engine builder and tuner, took on the duties of guiding Reggie Showers into title contention and serving as consultant for "Fast Freddie" Collis, who will finish 2003 with a career-best top 10 spot in the NHRA bike standings.
With Geno Scali only a stone's throw from clinching this year's PSB championship, you might think that Bryce would be bemoaning the disappointment of a season without the big prize, but you'd be wrong. At this weekend's 3rd AC Delco Nationals at The Strip at the Las Vegas Motor Speedway, he was upbeat, enthusiastic and grateful for the year he's had.
"Reggie and this team have come such a long way this year," he says. "We grew together as a team and learned to race as a unit and that's the part of all this that brings me the most satisfaction. What Angelle and I and the rest of the team accomplished in the past are things we'll always be proud of but it's a great feeling to know you don't have anything to prove."
Along with Angelle's three titles, Bryce won three additional bike championships with the late John Myers in 1992, 1993, and 1995. He is unsure of what his 2004 plans will be and admits that there are several options on the table as far as Star Racing is concerned. But the project that clearly lights his racing fire is the proposed Harley-Davidson entry expected to debut next year with Collis aboard as part of a joint venture with Harley aftermarket giant, S&S.
"I'm really excited about that Harley," says Bryce. "We recently made a few test passes with it down in Georgia and I think it's going to be a good bike almost immediately. I don't want to make the mistake of promising everyone it's going to start winning right away but it's a heck of a machine. We measured 300 horsepower at the rear wheels and the body is really sleek. We have our own setup on the engine and with 160 cubic inches and a five-inch bore, it's going to be quick.
"I think the time is coming when we'll see a lot more Harleys in the class. It's something the class needs and when we see more of them coming into the sport, it will bring lots of people to the events."
And when it happens, Bryce will have helped to achieve something else despite his having nothing left to prove.

Headline: Charley wins Outlaw Shootout!
As reported last week, Charley Karling suffered a first round loss to Ron Houniet with a less than perfect light. However, what was not known was the full details of his problems that weekend. Bent push rods, con rods and holes in cases were all suffered whilst almost all his passes had a problem with dropping a cylinder at the 1000 ft mark. In his first round loss against Houniet the lag he suffers off the line was overcome as he powered on his way past Houniet, before the cylinder dropped yet again.
However, at AHDRA races there is a supplementary competition for all non-qualifiers and first round losers in Top Fuel and Pro Fuel. They can then go into a `Outlaw Top Fuel Shoot Out' competition.
Anyhow, Charley and team entered - and won. Well done team!

Headline: Double amputee Showers races past adversity
Racers make countless adjustments to make them go faster. Most tinker with shocks, tires and engines. Reggie Showers changes his legs. Riding a motorcycle without legs might seem daunting, and straddling a 350-horsepower, full-race Suzuki Hayabusa at 190 mph might be downright unimaginable. The 39-year-old Showers, from the West Philadelphia, Pa., area, makes his living riding for the Star Racing team, which begins competition Friday in the Pro Stock Bike category of the NHRA Powerade Drag Racing Series. A double amputee below the knees since 1978, Showers made his debut in the motorcycle series in 1995 and has raced full time in NHRA for four seasons. He's in his first season with George Bryce's team, which has won 64 titles and six championships, including the last three with rider Angelle Savoie. The highlight of Showers' career came two months ago in Indianapolis, when he won his first NHRA title at the rain-delayed U.S. Nationals, the most prestigious race on the circuit. He had won his division's annual all-star race in Indianapolis the week before. Though Showers has spent most of his life walking on prosthetic legs, he has never accepted racing as a gimmick. The 6-footer stands tall among his racing peers, but he is 5 inches shorter when he attaches his racing legs, an adjustment none of his competitors can make. "(Bryce) told me that once we started going fast or winning, someone would complain about my racing legs," Showers said. "I say if anyone thinks we have an unfair advantage, they can climb on top of a (railroad) boxcar, touch a wire that sends 13,000 volts through their body, get their legs cut off, get some PDI Pro Series Race Legs, and they could have the same unfair advantage they think I have." That accident is how Showers became a double amputee as a 14-year-old eighth-grader on Memorial Day 1978. He and friends often played on boxcars on a dirt lot, and when he jumped from one car to another a little higher than the others, Showers made contact with the power wires. Only his basketball sneakers saved him, if not his legs. Still, life immediately changed for Showers, who had developed from a "fat boy" at puberty into a tall, slender star basketball player and school class president. "Things were really starting to happen for me before the accident," he said. "Then to be cut down like that ... I had a short-lived athletic career." That's as close to negativity as you'll hear from Showers. He vividly recalls being overweight as an adolescent and being the last kid picked for any teams, except football. "My first 14 years I was getting conditioned on how to survive and handle that accident. Everything had prepared me for that day. I never cried about it," he said. The month after the amputations, Showers was in a burn unit, followed by a month at a rehabilitation center in Philadelphia learning to use his prostheses. That left him barely one month to prepare for his freshman year, a time he used to re-learn how to ride a bicycle. "Being the popular kid helped in my social rehabilitation," Showers said. "My family and friends loved me and helped me. Nobody laughed at my scars or the way I walked. I was very fortunate." He acknowledged having had some self-confidence issues, though others never saw them. "I projected a confidence that many with disabilities or deformities do, but I had an insecurity inside," he said. "But that changed when I started to race motorcycles." Showers raced motorcycles illegally on the streets of Philadelphia, but it wasn't long until he switched to legitimate dragstrips. He kept his street bike at a girlfriend's house, and while his parents thought he was heading for a second year of classes at Temple University, Showers instead spent his days working on the bike and his nights racing it. From 1989 through 1994 he competed in the International Drag Bike Association, winning 25 titles and setting 14 records. Showers competed in 12 NHRA events from 1995 to 1999. He moved to the circuit full time three years ago, finishing 11th in points in 2000 and seventh the past two years. "When I started in NHRA, only a few friends at the races knew I was an amputee," Showers said. "I didn't want anybody's pity and didn't want to take the chance race officials wouldn't let me race." Showers was the subject of a two-part feature on "NHRA Today," a weekly program on what was then The Nashville Network. In 1997 that exposure led Showers to Tracy Slemker, a prosthetist who owns Prosthetic Design of Dayton, Ohio, and began sponsoring Showers. When Savoie and Bryce split before this season when they were unable to secure solid sponsorship funding, Slemker brought his sponsorship of Showers to Bryce's Star Racing. Showers has since won two national titles, the all-star event and is fourth in points. It also has led to a display trailer and a tour that provides seminars on prosthetic technology at all 15 Pro Stock Bike events on the NHRA tour. And racing has become only part of Showers' professional responsibilities. "I'm not a saint or an angel," he said, "but there's a method to my madness. I have a certain responsibility to the public because I am in the public's eye. "I'm always telling kids to believe in themselves and that you're only disabled if you think you are; disabilities are a state of mind." Showers frequently speaks at schools, visits Shriners Hospitals for Children and answers e-mails he receives from around the world. But his recent success has led to an "overwhelming" number of new requests. Nothing better exhibits Showers' inspirational role than his celebration after winning in Indianapolis. After dedicating the victory to his team and sponsor, he removed one leg and waved it above his head to the delight of the crowd. His message: even those with seemingly insurmountable obstacles can become winners.

Headline: UEM Pro stock bike rules
There is intensive debate within the European Pro Stock Bike Association regarding rider proposals to amend the weight breaks in favour of the larger engines. It will, in effect, mean that the smaller two valve engine favoured by riders such as Roger Petersson will remain with the same weight, whilst the larger 4 valve types favoured by the mainly British riders will be able to run 5 kg less in weight. However, opinion is finely balanced on the proposals with almost equal numbers for and against.

Headline: Prostar PSB rule proposal
I've just this week sent a letter of proposal to all Pro Stock racers asking their opinion on capping the Pro Stock limit to 90mm. This would eliminate the few exotic offset crank and mega dollar head engines that exist in the class. It would also allow a ton of new engine builders in the class and the ability for anyone to maintain their own engines. If these rules are accepted the cost of a PS engine would be around $15K not $25K each.

Headline: Jon Leret Racing season review
After a good comeback season in 2002 we were thinking that we should wait until next year, but after 20 years in this (travelling around European tracks waiting for the rain to stop) motorsport we should have known better.
Very optimistically we went to Santa Pod but had a lot of problems, so I was running around in the pits trying to steal every exhaust valve I could find. But it did not help us at all and we missed the ladder that was the quickest 8 bike field ever with a 6.9 bump spot. So, Santa Pod a waste of time? No, No!!
We saw all our good friends again after a long winter (yes you to Monique K.), the same people at the early morning cofee meetings - Roel K. Gotten, Gunnar O, Per Bengtsson, Ronny A and several other earlybirds, discussing and finding solutions to every major world problem like how to set up Your clutch etc….. Roel won the event.
Next race was Finland, the country where a 3 letter english word becomes 20 letters long in the local language! This meeting was much better for us with a new personal best of 6.41, and an event win after hard competition in the ladder(only solo runs…) This was our first trip racing at Alastaro and we will be back, you could relax with a beer at the restaurant in the pit watching the Finnish karaoke champion Mr King’s performances…..
Then we went to Sweden, end of that story, not qualified with a crack in the billet head, maybe also in Jon`s head after one day at the tribune drinking beer. However, no finals here since the rain came down.
Norway, this land where the sun is always shining was a lot better for us. Some small problems but with some good help from the De Haas family delivering the most genius repair stuff known to mankind - Hubba Bubba we did some good runs!
Let me also thank them for bringing cold beers to all the tracks in Europe, is it time for a Nobel prize……….?
A 6,47 was not enough against Roel and Sverre with stunning 6,17 and 6,18.,also Nils Ole’s 6,44 was a great run. Roel Koedam won again and was in the lead in the championship.
Germany was not a place we could go to this year, maybe 2004.
Next was Denmark at the Mosten Race day. This was the first time we were there, and hopefully not the last. It was a very well organized meeting with good food, good music and good beer, a great thank you to Mosten MC paying travel money and prize money to all the drivers even after the rain had stopped the racing leaving us only to do a burnout. It helped a lot in an always empty dragracing pocket.
The European Finals at Santa Pod turned out to be one of the best events ever, with a lot of good performances. Who could forget Roel Koedam`s stunning 6,04 (and to you Big Mo you are not 17 again so keep your feet on the ground…..) The ladder was even better than in May with a 6,8 bump spot but we went out in the first round against Ian King with identical times but with a little bit slower reaction time for Jon, maybe caused by the great birthday party for Roel Koedam on saturday night, we had a lot of fun there…….
Roel was already European Champion in Top Fuel bike and it`s about time to give his mechanic Marius who did a great job this year as always (thank you for the help you give us also). At the same time I would like to thank Ton Pels for giving us a used Dyna Datalogger and Benny Hartman for visiting us at the tracks (and also for the gift).
What about next year?? I hope that we are going to beat you all, that the Top Fuel Bike class continues to grow, that we can get Steve Woollatt out of England (I think it would have been easier to force England to drive on the right side of the road……), that Anne`s candy box is never going to be empty, and that we all are meeting at Santa Pod in May 2004!
Take care,

Headline: Turbo's shirts win race!
As you may remember EURODRAGSTER, TURBOVILLE AND SANTA POD helped sponsor a team in the `F1 in Schools challenge' last year with some uniforms. They had to design, build and get sponsorship for a co2 powered model dragster they then raced at heats all over the world and they did really well. It seems Adam Charnley from the St. Josephs team took a younger team under his wing this year and persuaded them that team shirts should be an important part of their strategy too so went back to Ian for help. He provided them with his new Pit-Polo shirts at a fraction of the cost of pro start-line shirts and again the plan worked a treat! Adam sent this letter to Ian and tells the story:
"Hi Ian, the competition was today....as you know we won the regionals last year with st Joes...and as you know the shirts I had made were for a bunch of 12 yr olds I'd been teaching for the last 6 months....well....you can add another winning team to your list!!!!...not only did they win their key stage...out of 20 teams....they beat all the older kids of which there were 40 teams!!!!they quite simply obliterated the competition.....although everything was brilliant...they couldn't have done it without you!!....the point that the judges picked up on was the team presentation and more importantly the shirts!....they got 40 more points than every other team just because of your shirts!!!!so thanks...ill send you some photos as soon as I can get them....oh yeh I almost forgot......they were on midlands today TV tonight....I believe a certain shirt designer got a mention when asked where they got their shirts made!!! So on to the nationals now...lets hope they can repeat the performance...and maybe put one over on us from last year and win the whole thing!!!!!
cheers mate

Headline: Paul Rose’s `year that wasn’t’
What a season, Christmas 2002 arrived, remortgaged houses, mega credit cards – I’m off racing!
Shopping list – buy Tim Blakemores Funnybike, support from Kawasaki (UK), new pit bike, generator, spares and Mr Tim Pork Pie / Ravioli, what can go wrong…..?
First meet, UEM Main Event and run a 7.02 and qualify no 8 – yes 8! But with him up above looking down on us we got to the final of Top Fuel Bike! Our first pot for the new team – what a rider!
But then the tide turned and a succession of rare mistakes, red lights, no nitrous, clutch springs in gearbox (!), broken valves, blown head gaskets, dodgy solenoids, pistons, change crankcases, change blocks, more valves! The pistons and valves had more shows than The Mousetrap and the motor was like a brides nightie………
But Tim and my wallet took it in their stride. I was gutted for the crew of Augy and Steve who put in so much time and effort for so little reward, but we had a great time. After racing Tim paid for a meal (a rare mistake), Steve bought a packet of fags but only one (a rare mistake), Augy forgot to connect the nitrous (a rare mistake), Paul opened his wallet again (a rare mistake).
However, I enjoyed every minute of the worst year I’ve had of rare mistakes!
Highlights of the year? – Roel Koedam, Dave Beck, Midgo, and love of my life, Scary Jane……….. Unbelievable, well done boys and girls!
What’s up for 2004? We’ve raised enough credit card funds and support to run some bikes and crew, parts and slippers for 2004. Sorry kids, this is where your inheritance has gone…………….Fresh start, remortgages, more credit cards, loans and support for two riders AND Ravioli Tim. A new ZX12 Funnybike with support from Kawasaki Motors (UK) and Steve Rice / Muzzy. New Prostock rider and ex Superstreet Champion Tony Clark, ex Supertwin rider and new Competition Bike rider Shaggy Daniels.
Finally, I would like to thank the following people and sponsors who have made my last 31 years in dragracing worthwhile :-
Tim, Steve, Augy, Mark and John Dent, G, Richie, Viv, Banger, Dom `TVR’ Trickett, Kimo, Baz, Rebore Rod, Lisa, Kawasaki (UK), Lucy and Ken Thorn, Cannon, Dave Beck, Roger Upperton, Pecker, Don, all the Santa Pod staff, Caroline Day, all the Shakespeare County Raceway crew, Lee Childs and everybody who has helped me over the years. Good luck to all in 2004, we’ll wave to you as we go by………
Paul Rose, PR Motorsports
p.s. as per usual, we have a bargain end of year sale. Ex Paul Willis GSX Prostock Bike (great for Comp too). Has run 7.62 @ 160. Choice of motors, ready to go 8.5 seconds all day. With small reliable engine from £5000. Will take road bike or motorhome in part exchange, credit cards and finance available if required. Give me a ring for details.

Headline: Atco cancellation
It seems that the announcement by Prostar that they would be dropping the Atco round for one year with the agreement of the owners (ex Prostar owner Joe Sway & family) whilst they upgrade the safety of the track is denied by Joe Sway himself. In an open letter to the racers he expresses his displeasure:-
" Concerning giving Prostar a one-year hiatus as Mr. Kizer calls it is not true. Mr. Kizer lacks conventional communication skills. I believe his only way to communicate is e-mail. I received the letter via e-mail dated October 13 which I received late on Tuesday the 14th. I called Mr. Kizer’s office on Wednesday morning the 15th. I was told he would not be back until Friday the 17th. I asked if he would please call me. I then received another email that was the schedule change you all have read. As I write this I have tried to contact the Prostar office by phone & fax with no one answering all day. I have not graciously agreed to anything. Prostar for the year 2004 and future years has been cancelled. It would be nice that someone that I have had a long-standing relationship for fourteen years would have the common decency to call.
There will be a motorcycle race at Atco on September 12 of 2004. If you are not familiar with business. The restrictive covenant and non compete clause I signed in 1994, when I sold Prostar lasts 10 years.

Headline: Bradders insults `G'.........
I would just like to thank Paul 'Grumpy' Watson, Dave Smith and Kim for their help at the recent National Finals with the DSD Hayabusa. Our 8.23 second pass at 179mph was only a few hundredths of a second outside the outright record. This was my first ACU meeting on a prepped track for over 14 months so to say I was happy would be an understatement! The bike was on a fairly soft setting and I was riding a 2 step for the first time ever, so there's more to come! The best bit is the bike passed its MOT on the Thursday before so it's street legal too!!
Finally I would like to thank Graham 'G' Dance, the fastest barman in the pits, for the best race I have had the pleasure to take part in. You sir, are a gent.

Headline: Power Racing Promotions meeting
The latest meeting of the promoters, organisers and racers representatives for the UEM / FIA European Championships met in a hotel close to Hahn airport, Germany yesterday.
First time attendees were Dave Alexander representing the Top Methanol Funnycar class (after Leif Andreasson stepped down from his post) and Rico Anthes, promoter of Europe's largest dragrace meet, the NitrOlympx in Hockenheim.
Rico confirmed that his event was to be held on it's usual slot of the 20 / 21 / 22nd August 2004.
Representing the bike classes were Ian King for Top Fuel bike, and Roger Lyren for Prostock. Unfortunately, no Supertwin representative was present.
Much time was spent on discussing the content and cost of the television package, with Rico making some proposals based on his experience of filming his own event. It was recognised, however, that it will be difficult to dramatically improve program quality at the budget provided. Racers contributions to the TV fund provide just over a third of the total outlay.
Another major topic of discussion was the provison of concrete or steel safety barriers for a minimum of 300 metres after the finish line at all tracks (Hockenheim already provides such barriers). It was acknowledged by the organisers of all venues that this is a target that they all will strive to achieve, but that cost is a major problem. Rico explained that each 2.5 metre section of concrete wall cost around €2000, so this provision costs some €480,000 or £340,000.
A request was made by Roger Lyren for provision of travel money for UEM bikes, similar to that enjoyed by the FIA cars. It was explained that the entry fee for the cars was around €230, but for the bikes only €50. The counter proposal was that all the bikes should pay the €230 fee as the €50 does not cover all the actual permit and insurance fees anyway. The balance from all the meetings could then be redistributed amongst the bikes travelling abroad. The bike reps were asked to consider this proposal.
The next meeting will be held in the UK to coincide with the Autosport show in January.

Headline: Well done Woody !
Phil Wood sealed victory in the Straightliners Top Bike Championship on sunday with a string of mid 8 second passes in the final round at Elvington culminating in an 8.54 on the BIG CC GSXR Katana. What made it more impressive was he had to foot shift to do it, so still scope to go.
Also representing BIG CC for the first time was Richard Stubbins on the second Katana ( 1500cc GSX ) who dialled straight down to an 8.7 on his first meeting with the bike. Richard next year hopefully will be the first BIG CC sponsored rider in Superstreet at the Pod.
Winter time plots for next season include Multi Stage Boost controllers for both turbocharged bikes & various other plans of mice and men.

Proprieters of Stripbike.com, Dwight Drum and Gary Larsen have asked us to pass on their best wishes to all the European visitors to the Prostar Finals and regrets that they will be unable to make the annual pilgrimage to Gainesville.
They have to miss the event this year because of their successful bid to break into the NASCAR media ranks. They now do two or three NASCAR teleconferences weekly and recently got approved for media credentials for Homestead-Miami Speedway next week and in November Championship Week just after the finals. It wass very difficult to get NASCAR approval and they don't want to blow the opportunity.

Headline: NHRA PSB review
Michael Phillips’ win the Pro Stock Bike class was one of the more surprising of the weekend if only for the reason that Michael almost didn’t even make it to the race. Michael said that he didn’t have anyone to drive with him to the race until he mentioned that fact to his barber who then went and closed his shop and helped Michael get to Maple Grove. Now that’s a real friend, isn’t it? This was the first win for Michael since his Houston win in 1995 and he becomes the eighth different winner in the bike class this year which is, by far, a single season record.
The bike class is so strong that two of the national event winners this year (Michael & Blaine Hale) aren’t even in the top ten. Did you know that of all the racers in the field this weekend only one guy besides Michael raced at the Houston race in ’95? And that one guy would be none other than Steve Johnson, who qualified third, right behind Mike in Houston. Most trackside observers think that Mr. Phillips may be the most naturally talented rider in the class and I was glad to hear that he and Harry Lartigue are still good friends. Mike, who rode for Harry in Houston in 1995, said that he called his former owner between rounds in Maple Grove and got some tuning advice that helped him win the race. Sounds like a free haircut may be in the works for Harry.
Geno Scali needs to win a couple of rounds in Las Vegas or risk going into Pomona without having nailed down the title. Shawn Gann is 151 points back and, with her runner-up finish in Reading, Angelle Savoie pulled to within 154 of the leader. Did you know that the loss was the first in a final round in over a year for Angelle? The reigning champ had strung together six consecutive wins going back to Indy of 2002 and is now an amazing 16-4 in her last twenty championship rounds. Not bad, huh?

Headline: Fred Furlong Racing Review
After two years racing in 10.90 bike we decided the time was right to move up to 9.90 bike for the 2003 season. This class is dominated by Big Bore GSXR's, Nitrous Bandits and Hayabusa's so should we tune the old oil cooled GSXR1100 or go for something completely different. After talking to Martyn at Crescent Suzuki the latter choice was taken and a new GSXR1000 puchased and run in on the road over the Christmas period. The dyno showed a very healthy 150bhp so it was decided chassis changes were all that was needed to make this bike a winner. The engine and clutch was left completely stock, no nitrous, lockup or shifter to complicate things and only 988cc but what a flyer this little bike turned out to be. Several number one qualifiers, one being a perfect 9.900, getting on the podium five times out of the eight rounds and unfortunately losing the closest drag race in European history are just a few of the highlights we have had this year. At this point I would like to thank all the other 9.90 riders for without them we would not have a championship particulary Steve Coombs who chased me all the way, the result not being decided until the final round at Santa Pod. Thanks to Eurodragster.com for keeping us informed down here in Somerset, Sandra my partner and burnout inspector (Sandra would like to add she had nothing to do with my burnout over the startline at the National Finals for which I was rightly reprimanded ~ sorry Ian) We are now looking forward to next year whether it be in Superstreet or defending our number one plate in 9.90 / 9.50. Final thanks goes out to all our sponsors including Martyn @ CRESCENT SUZUKI, Steve @ GOODYEAR DUNLOP, Barry @ FUCHS SILKOLENE, George @ TALON, Adam @ EARLS PERFORMANCE, Robin @ FALCON SHOCKS, RST LEATHERS and FURLONG TYRES.

Headline: Diamond Powersports new bike chain
The innovative R & D team at Diamond Powersports has raised the bar again for advanced engineering in the drag race industry. By combining the technical drag bike ingenuity of Pierre Elliott, president of Diamond Powersports, with the high-tech manufacturing capability of Kaycee Wada, president of EK Chain, they have produced the strongest 530 drag race bike chain in the world.
This new chain, DRZ-530, has a tensile strength of 11,500 lbs, which makes it stronger than even some of the best 630 chains on the market today. Though it was just recently introduced, racing teams using Diamond Powersports DRZ- 530 chain are already winning and setting track records weekly.
Antron Brown proclaimed, "I attribute winning the Lucas Oil Nationals in Brainerd, Minnesota to using the new DRZ-530 chain. The ride was incredible; it was like I had no chain at all."
Mark Peiser, crew chief for the Don Schumacher Motorcycle Teams reported, "The bike was so quiet, I had to look down to make sure I put the chain on. I was so impressed I put the new DRZ-530 chain on both Antron''s and Angelle''s bikes."
Further, Matt Hines, crew chief for the Screamin'' Eagle Vance & Hines V- Rod Race Team and three-time NHRA world drag racing champion noted such an improvement in performance that he claimed, "This new DRZ-530 chain is absolutely the best drag racing chain on the market!"
For more information on how you can equip your bike with this truly innovative "next generation" racing chain, visit your local motorcycle dealer or www.diamondpowersports.com/

Headline: We're back!
The King Racing Top Fuel Bike team returned from the inaugural Xtreme Madness event in Athens, Greece late last night.
The team of Nick Pepper, Mark King, Gary Page and Martin Brookman wowed the 20,000 plus strong crowd with 4 amazing quarter mile runs with smoke billowing from the spinning rear tyre on the difficult tarmac surface in 30 degree sunshine. Despite the use of the old fashioned Traction Action compound on the rear tyre (courtesy of G Max Fuels) and major clutch and fuel timer setting changes, Ian could not overcome the challenges of the unprepared surface and settled for putting on a crowd pleasing show rather than just fast passes. The enthusiastic Greeks who, in the main, had never seen the spectacle of a 1000 HP Nitro burning motorcycle were stunned at the sight and sounds, mobbing the bike and team at every opportunity.
The promoters, ASM Pro Racing, put on arguably the best show of it's type ever seen in Europe featuring other shows from Martin Hill in the Fireforce Jet, Craig Jones with his amazing Buell Harley stunt act, the Green Mountain Outlaw street stunters from the US, Canadian freestyle jumpers Beniot Milot and Tommy Fortin, and Nigel Morris in the blown alcohol burning Big Foot monster Truck.
Despite Martin Hill being forced to go and get his broken wrist plastered in hospital after falling over the new Olympic light railway (claiming it was nothing to do with the Mythos Beer or Ouzo consumed in copious quantities) he put on a great show, with the Police being called by local residents concerned at the `bomb's going off at the airport venue........
The sunday night after show party (which degenerated into a drink fuelled grape fight) was kindly hosted by Option Press (who publish Max Power and EVO in Greece amongst others).
Option Press have produced a stunning Drag Race Review magazine that they plan to repeat whilst following the 2004 UEM/FIA series. Although mainly in Greek, the pictures are just stunning, and well worth seeking out just to see the quality of the publication - www.dragracingreview.gr
All in all, a great event, and one worth considering for next year if you fancy a few days in the sunny climes of the Greek capital.

Headline: Charley and Dave have a bad weekend..........
Unfortunately, our two Europeans in the US did not have such a good time this weekend after both Dave Beck and Charley Karling failed to qualify for their respective races. Dave failed to make the 16 bike Pro Mod field at the Prostar Schnitz Fall Nationals in Montgomery, whilst Charley was outside the ladder at the AHDRA meet in Rockingham.
Charley broke the timing gear and the cam cover on a practice run on Friday. He got it welded and everything else fixed for the last round of qualifying but needed another run to get dialed in. He ran a 7.0 but needed a low 6.90 to qualify.
He made another practice run on Sunday and went 6.61, but it was too late to qualify for the race.
He ran a 1.06 60ft on the run he broke on and a 1.07 on the practice run on Sunday (also a 4.17 660ft on Sunday) so he's close to running some really good 1/4's.
He will have everything ready for Las Vegas after some great help from Jim McClure who made him up a billet cam cover from Overkill parts after which he moved on to Ray Price's shop to get everything ready for the meet in Las Vegas.

Headline: Shaggy to Comp Bike!
Ex Supertwin Top Gas rider Nick "Shaggy" Daniels ended the 2003 season on a high with big thanks to a few people who made the National Finals at Santa Pod very special indeed.
Says Nick, "After a great season in Top Gas with a new personal best of 10.3 on "Scooby" (at 350cc the smallest bike in Top Gas) the time has come to move onwards and (hopefully) upwards!"
The end of any era is usually marked with thanks, and this one is no exception.
"After 6 years of racing in Top Gas, I have thanks aplenty for the people that have helped me along the way. Thanks go to Mick Bubb of MPG Racing for getting me into the sport in the first place, and supporting me all the way; to Dave "Fluffy" Hirst for his prototype ignition that helped me achieve my PB this year; Barrie Gregory, Ric Naylor, Don Irvine and Andy "Duck" Smith for some great close (and not so close!) racing throughout the season.
Although not a racer, thanks have to go to Spec for numerous hours spent welding and fabricating into the night, and Scooby would like to send a special thanks to George Laycock, who's overpowering TL1000 cut through the competition like a knife and made me realise that the era of the 2-stroke is coming to an end, thus helping me make the decision to move classes into Comp Bike.
Which leads on beautifully to the biggest thank you of the moment. Who would have thought that a one day ride in 2002 on a GSX1100 Comp Bike would inspire the move that then took a year to make? 12 months later, for 3 weeks on the trot, Paul Rose has helped, supported and mentored me through the tentative steps into another class. After a RWYB, an NSA meeting, numerous phone calls and text messages, culminating in me riding the same bike from a year ago (albeit with the Zebra bodywork made famous by Helen Curran) in the National Finals, the decision has been made that Comp Bike is the way to go!
So a HUGE thank you to Paul, for giving up his time (not to mention a weekend at the seaside with 'The Missus'!), travelling half way across the country on 3 consecutive weekends, just so I could get to grips with riding a bike 3 times bigger than Scooby (and play with nitrous!).
Apreciation and gratitude to Andy Haley for: 1) towing the bike because Nikki didn't want to, 2) spending the night in the van so he could help on the Sunday and 3) general encouragement and a**e kicking ...
Thanks also to the rest of the Paul Rose Racing Team;- Kim, Viv, Dave, Richie etc. (as Ian King mentioned here a couple of weeks ago, the menagerie of 'weird and weirder') for their help, support, advice and general abuse, along with everyone else in the CB class for their friendliness, help and advice, as well as spare nitrous!
Looking forward to a great 2004, whilst being very grateful for the last 6 years in a great class with great people!
Shaggy

Headline: Ray Price Announces New Rider
Ray Price Racing were back on track this weekend at Screamin' Eagle Performance Parts Nationals presented by The Carolina Harley-Davidson Dealers Association at Rockingham Dragway.
While Ray Price continues to take physical therapy sessions several times a week, Wayne Pollack, Garner, NC got the nod for the ride of a lifetime.
Last week, Ray Price Racing packed up and went to Rockingham for a test session, Pollack's first time in the 850 horsepower saddle. Pollack is not without drag racing and racing history - www.waynepollack.com
Most recently Pollack set a new Land Speed record at 242.5 mph at Maxton, NC. But Pollack said, "the new land speed record was great, but it was like riding a bicycle after riding the Ray Price fueler."
And how would Pollack explain his first pass at the Rock, "Intense," he gasped, "It was like sitting on a bicycle and someone rear ends you with a truck, hitting you at 70 and keeps going. It really pulls hard, but I feel good and ready to jump back on it at the Rock."
Ray Price, "I think Wayne will be good with the team. We all have a lot to learn about each other but the fit looks good. Jeremy Hoy and Justin Heinle and I have worked to put together a good combination. I look forward to seeing everyone at the Rock."
Price is thankful for his sponsor support, Ray Price Harley-Davidson, Raleigh H. O. Headline: Well done Mel!
I'm proud of you Mel Morris. Mel bought a shell of a bike in Nov 2002 - a GSX1100 ET, to compete in 9.90. He built a shed in the back garden, bought some tools & set to work on his bike. Early mornings, work and late nights, lots of cash (DEBT FREE)& a lot of hard work. Any gifts I buy him are for the bike. He has been out with the bike on / off since March.
Mel recenty changed his job, they offered him sponsorship for his dragracing (wow!!)- who would say no? Mel has just had the paint work done on the bike at SMR in Heywood, it looks great and the sponsors were pleased.
They had a photo shoot on Saturday for their new brochure and Mel took the bike along for photo's. The sponsors are called Garic, a plant hire company. Mel will hopefully be bringing a sample portaloo & shower to the Flame & Thunder from Garic, who can also be found on their website at www.garic.co.uk
Thanks to you all out there who have helped Mel (you know who you are). The bike isn't perfect yet, but we never leave disappointed, it's an achievement just taking part. For a newcomer he's done really good. Good Luck!

Headline: Turbo reports
What can I say, a dream ending to our first season of top-fuel Supertwin with a surprise win at the national Finals. Although not as hard fought as we would have liked, the class here in the UK should be better subscribed next year and we will be ready for them. Commiserations to the teams of Bernie Hepworth and Chris Stebbings, who both suffered catastrophic engine failures at the weekend but we know they will both be back bigger and stronger in 2004.
The season was a frantic one for us as we started at the Speedfreaks Ball with our own mechanical mayhem which put us out of the first round of the championship. We then proceeded to get as much track time as possible to learn the black art of racing with Nitromethane and it was indeed a steep curve, but great fun nevertheless. A lot of advice was given by guru's like Rob van Geffen, Bernie H, Tony Ruggerio, Dale Nungesser, Willem Been, Krusi, Ronny Aasen, Svein Gottenberg, Al Smith, Frank Brachtvogel, Vincent Pels etc. and we heeded it all, then applied the relevant parts to our set-up.
The goal was simple, like Steve Clutterbuck's to race a nitro Harley on the cheap and survive to race next season. We took it all very cautiously in small steps and aimed for consistency while resisting the overwhelming urge to tip the can in search of power.
The 'S&S Sure-Shot' is a small capacity, single cam, street motor in a heavy mild steel chassis with a small back tire so we were going to have to work out our own settings to make this bike work. A lot of people couldn't understand what we were doing and just presumed that any Nitro Harley would instantly run into the low sevens and so I spent a lot of time trying to explain the reality of the game. The rule for us was 66% nitro max if the cast engine cases were to survive so we kept to that and chiseled away at the tune-up bit by bit until we had a 9.9 bracket bike. By that time we had a better understanding of what was doing what and why with a good database of runs to refer to. It was this consistency that saw us through the finals at Santa Pod this fall as each run gained us a tenth improvement on the last finishing up with an arrow straight 9.36 @ 146mph in our final ride into the sunset that Sunday.
It was a great event for the sportsman racers and a fitting end to one of the best years of drag racing I have ever seen in the UK. The tracks and facilities were superb all year and we were blessed with great weather all season. I don't think I have ever seen the Santa Pod track so well prepped all year, even at test and tunes. Kjell just worked his magic and the staff were incredibly helpful at all times, as were the Shakespeare County staff. It just made it so much easier for a rookie like me so big thanks to all!
Massive thanks must go to Ian 'RUSH' Carruthers who supported me all year, made all the parts for the bike, crewed for me, advised me, kept me safe and sane, all for the price of an occasional cup of tea, the man is a star and no way could I have done this without him. Also big thanks to Dave Witts, Leo, Gareth, Ben, Mark, Paul, Jos, and Barry Sheavills, and all the others that got roped into helping all year, I owe you. Thanks also to my fellow paparazzi for some great shots, it felt strange being on the receiving end of the lens. Must say a special thanks to Sharkman and Tog who work so hard for the case of European Drag Racing, we all owe you two a lot!
I can honestly say I have never enjoyed myself so much as I have this year racing top-fuel and will endeavour to improve next year, funds permitting. The bike would never have existed without the continuing support of my fantastic sponsors:-
S&S Cycle, Red Line Oil, Rivera Engineering, Pro-Mod Engineering, Custom Chrome Europe, Zodiac, Milwaukee Sprayer, Jims Machining, Jim McClure, Aasen Racing, Sprint Dampers, Braided Steel Aerotek, King Racing and Rune Fjeld Motorsports.

Headline: Grumpy year
Well, I'm very happy after my first season in pro stock bike.
We have finished 3rd in the ACU championship, run a PB. of 7.62 @ 175mph, and although we have been chasing a few problems over the season we never gave up and now we have enough information to plan for next year.
A huge THANK YOU to my crew -KEV and KIM and last but not least my girlfriend KAREN as those who know me already know I have been struggling with a back injury all year and my crew have been superb in looking after me.
Without the following people I could not have achieved all this - Ken Cooper who put himself out everytime to help me when I was in trouble, Paul Rose who lent me so many parts I could have built another bike (ha,ha), Dave Beck who has helped me throughout the season, to my sponsors Q8 Oils for all the tech advice (MIKE and DANNY).
As ever we will be looking for sponsors over the winter so we can step up our program for the next season so no matter how much you think you can help we would be very pleased to hear from you.
